La Sénia, Montsià

If you would like to discover some places which contain a lot of stories of the Spanish civil war, you should make a stop at the airfield of La Sénia. To defend themselves against the rebel military coup, the government of the II Republic planned the construction of a number of military airfields in Catalonia. One of the most important was the airfield of La Sénia, built in 1937. Although so far only the first phase of the planned tourist space has been arranged, you can get a good idea of how the aerodrome was.

In an area of 90 hectares of land with three landing zones, shelters, a house of command, a residence, maintenance depots and 2 aircraft profiles (including the Russian aircraft "fly"), you can imagine the soldiers preparing air strikes. An element that did not passed unnoticed by t Franco's troops, which in April 1938 took it and converted it into one of the most important airfields to attack the front of the Ebro.

If you want some more information, take advantage of the 45 minutes guided tour organized by the Tourist Office of the Sénia. The meeting point is the Tourist Office located next to Town Hall (c / Tortosa, 1). Transport from the tourist office to the airfield (2.6 km) should be done with your own car.

You can complement the visit with a guided tour through the urban center of the Sénia through spaces and buildings connected with the stay of the Republicans and, ultimately, the Condor Legion during the Civil War.
