The trip: Route of the senses at the Gaià

Hiking

foto

Tamarit, Tarragonès

Suitable age:

From 2 to 6 years

On foot

About the place:

Would you like to ply a gymkhana with the smallest following the Gaià river? Just a few meters of the mouth of the Gaià, between fields and marshes, the children between 2 and 6 years will have a great time discovering nature with all senses. Do you know how the laurel tastes or how mint smells? Do you hear the sound the green frog makes? And if we touch the trunk of the "ash tree”... it rasps! An adventure with a panoramic surprise: halfway the sea with the beach and the castle of Tamarit upward the rock will surprise you.

An amusing exit to entertain the youngest ones! (See pictures)

Direction tips:

You have to follow the indications towards the Camping Tamarit in Altafulla. 30 meters before the entry of the camping you will find a track on the left, with an indication that says "adapted itinerary". Follow this path about 400 meters. Park the car in front of the Hort de la Sínia. The beginning of the itinerary is 50 meters on your right after passing the Hort de la Sínia. You will see a panel with the explanation of which fauna and flora you can find on your way and some fences of wood. You have to follow this path until the mouth of the Gaià river in the sea. It is in this stretch where the gymkhana of the senses can be played, with panels adapted for blind people. Once at the beach you have to go towards the left until a new path on the left identified with some wooden indicators. You have to follow the Gaià river again heading to the Pedrera del Mèdol. First you will go trough a narrower stretch until you arrive to a field. Go straight on until the end of the field. Once you arrive to the crossroads, you have to go towards the left crossing the river (which normally is dry in this stretch). Once you have passed the river, you will immediately find on your  left the point where you have pioneered the itinerary again.

The best season:

winter, autumn, summer, spring

Timetable:

It is necessary to avoid the hours of strong insolation of the summer days. In the winter, you have to remember that it becomes dark around 17:30.

Lunch tips:

At about 15 minutes in car (some 10 km) you will find the Farmhouse Caballo de Copas, a restaurant in the Catllar where you’ll find meat on the ember and calçotades (with previous booking).

More info:

Difficulty: very easy
Type: circular route
Duration: aprox. 50 minutes (with stops)
Distance: aprox. 1,5 km
Accessibility: the first stretch to the beach is accessible with wheelchairs and prams. The second stretch is narrower and in rainy periods there can be mud which complicates the accessibility. It is a route adapted for blind people, since the panels are also written in Braille.
Recommendations: for cold days take coats with you; whith good weather, use lighter clothes; use  good footwear and take water with you.

You can complete the excursion with a visit to the Hort de la Sínia, a place where the children can see how the vegetables grow, how the medicine plants smell or how the bees live.
