Hiking

foto

Horta de Sant Joan, Terra Alta

Suitable age:

From 7 onwards

On foot

About the place:

If you thought that the Ports only offer walls of huge conglomerates such as the area of Els Estrets or strange rock formations in the corner of Marc, he surprised the route of the corner Corretja. It is a path to enjoy the smell of the forest and wilderness. And among the pines, oaks and Alzina, the trail of the man: a lime kiln and two cottages in ruins. Until the sixties of the twentieth century this area was a step of transhumant herds from Lower Aragon and Catalonia.

A walk to enjoy the senses: the smell of the forest, panoramic view of Els Ports, wind noise that plays with the trees and the cool river water Estrets. (See photos)

Direction tips:

Leave Horta de Sant Joan direction Arnes through the T330. You must follow directions "Els Ports". Then you should take the paved trail that takes you to the recreational area "The Franqueta”. It are 12.7 km. Park the car at the picnic area. The route starts at the wooden bridge you will find behind the children's play ground. Cross the Estrets river through the bridge and continue for about 5 minutes until you find the indicator pointing to the left in the direction of the farmhouse Corretja. From this point the trail will go up sharply. It will take you about 25 minutes to arrive to the lime kiln. You will find the remains of the lime kiln on your right. Follow the path that turns right and approximately 15 minutes later you will see the farmhouses of Corretja and Nasi. In front of the ruins you will find two cylindrical stones that were used to work the land. Just in front of them there is a sign showing the direction to La Franqueta. Follow it. A couple of minutes later you will arrive at the highest point of the route, where you can enjoy of spectacular views. At this point the road forks. We take the path right down the stairs.

After about 15 minutes you’ll start hearing the water. We will reach the path that follows the river Estrets. A sign indicates the way back to the area of La Franqueta. In about 15 minutes you’ll be back at the starting point of the itinerary.

The best season:

autumn, summer, spring

Lunch tips:

After a good walk, you can recuperate at the Franqueta picnic area. You will find an area with playground equipment, barbecues, tables and services. But if you prefer somebody cooks for you, we recommend the restaurant and rural hotel Mas del Cigarrer, about 15 km from Horta de Sant Joan to Bot.

More info:

Difficulty: medium
Type: circular route
Duration: approx. 1.30 hours (no stops)
Distance: approx. 3.3 km
Accessibility: the first section makes a strong rise with a drop of 100 meters, so start slowly as not to tire early in the route. From the farmhouses on it goes downhill.
Recommendations: This is an area where there is wind, so protect the children. You must bring proper footwear and sufficient water.

We recommend the route for children from 7 years on, since this is a route with a continuous rise for almost half an hour.
